Design and style have two different meanings and serve different purposes in a space. Both design and style serve unrelated needs of a room and are addressed separately by interior designers. They each serve a critical purpose in making a home feel cohesive and elegant, as well as productive to live in and maintain. When both design and style are considered in a thoughtful manner, a space will feel cohesive and function effectively. In this post, I will explain the difference between design and style and highlight my favorite kind of design and style. Design is the focus on the functionality and placement of the elements in a room. The lighting in a space, location of your essential appliances, and the accessibility of your storage are all design elements that you consciously decide on as an interior designer. These are all examples of design choices that are made to bring order and function to the home. Thoughtful design can make daily life simpler and eliminate complications in the flow of your home and how you use each room. It is the job of an interior designer to know design tips and tricks that will make any space a dream to live in. When a home is designed well, it makes it easier to clean, organize, and relax in. Style is completely focused on the aesthetics and look of a space. It does not have much to do with functionality, and has everything to do with the visual components of a room. Style is personal, and your home should be filled with pieces that aim to please your own aesthetics. If you focus on the style that you enjoy, without worrying about the opinion of others, you will have a space that feels uniquely your own. Your space will become an extension of your personality and your guests will feel they are stepping into your world when they walk through the door. This will give your home the confident and comforting atmosphere that everyone wants. There are many different interior design styles. A few examples are bohemian, traditional, modern, industrial, and coastal. Style plays a crucial role in translating your taste to any home, it is important to do your research and find the best fit for you and your family. When it comes to the design of a home, storage and functionality are always my main focus. It is important to be thoughtful with the placement of your essentials in any space so that your daily routine is seamless and difficult chores are made simpler. An example of this is the impact of where you place the utility room in your home. It is functionally satisfying to have your utility room on the same floor as your bedroom and bathroom, making it a short trip to wash your clothes. Another example of design functionality is a drawer for your dustbin in your kitchen. You can have a pull out drawer installed in the lower cabinet where you can discreetly hide your rubbish. Another creative design storage idea is using baskets throughout your space to store anything and everything. Baskets are a great way to put away towels, blankets, and whatever you want out of sight. Storage in a space declutters and promotes a feeling of restfulness and order. This will make your home the peaceful fortress from the outside world that it should be. Design and it's functionality plays a huge role in our everyday lives. Thoughtful design decisions can impact our emotions and rest more than we realize. One of my favorite and most loved styles is Scandinavian Style- which has a lot of elements of Modern Style. I love this style because of the fresh colors, clean lines, and cozy textures. The finishes are warm and the textures are eye-catching. The overall energy of a home decorated with Scandinavian style is inviting, comforting, and feels like home from the moment you open the door. This is also a classic style that will not go out of style over the years. It is not a trendy design, which means in 10 years your home will still look good with Scandinavian style. The color palette of Scandinavian style is minimal. In a Scandinavian styled space, texture is more of the focus than vibrant color. You will commonly find muted and natural colors in this style. The color chosen for walls with this style is typically white or off-white, which leave the focus on the furniture pieces in the space. Tan, cream, muted orange, light sky blue and sage green are the most common colors found in Scandinavian style. The finishes and fabrics in Scandinavian style are classic. There are always elements of natural wood, woven wicker, wool, and leather with this style. There is a long history of furniture and rug production in Scandinavian countries, and you will notice that many of the brands incorporate these materials in their products. There is also a focus on sustainability and a connection to nature in many of the mission statements of Scandinavian brands. The underlying focus of this style is craftsmanship and materials that are made to last and not be constantly replaced. Another way that you can highlight Scandinavian style is by bringing nature into the space wherever possible. One way you can do this is by adding plants to your room. Minimalism is a large focus in Scandinavian style. This is a moment where design functionality and style meet. To achieve the Scandinavian style, you should design your space with ample storage. The goal should be that anything not in use is kept in a storage location out of sight. In conclusion, design is focused on the layout and functionality of your space. The way you can achieve this is by being thoughtful with your appliance locations, storage options, and consciously thinking of how your space will be used when lived in. Style is the aesthetics of your space and focuses on the look and feel of the room and home. There are many styles to choose from, but you should always pick a style that you like and reflects your personality. My favorite design style is Scandinavian style, which has a focus on muted colors, natural finishes, and tactile textures. If you make sure to focus on both the design and style goals of your space you will have an inviting, functional, and beautiful home.
