8 Travel Tips for Seniors
Just because you’re getting older doesn’t mean you have to stop traveling. While changes in conditions can quickly take its toll on the elderly and their traveling caregivers, there are a few things that can be done to make the experience a more pleasant one. Consider the following travel tips for seniors.
Plan Ahead
Start planning in advance so there are no surprises in the itinerary. Also, the earlier you plan, the better chance you can take advantage of discount prices and travel deals. Get help from a family member if needed and ask them to look up reviews on hotels and restaurants in the area to ensure you have the best experience.
Look for Senior Discounts
When making travel arrangements, be sure to look for senior discounts. Many hotels and restaurants offer reduced prices for seniors if you check-in on certain days or if you plan on dining on specific days of the week. Sometimes these discounts aren’t advertised so it never hurts to ask.
Book Non-Stop Flights
Connecting flights can often be stressful, especially for seniors with mobility problems. Navigating strange airports, handling baggage and going through check-in points can take its toll on the elderly, especially when they are traveling alone. Instead, shop for non-stop flights that make the travel experience as stress-free as possible. Non-stop flights tend to cost a little more, but it reduces the chances of a missed connection and lessens the overall travel time.
Considering Disability Options
With both airline and hotel reservations, be sure to check off any disability option if you require assistance. Waiting until you start to board the plane to ask for assistance with a wheelchair can cause delays in boarding.
Scheduling Activities
Traveling with seniors often means you need to go at a slower pace. Especially for seniors with chronic illness, they may need to lie down and relax more frequently. Plan events sparingly to ensure there is plenty of time for rest.
Packing a Carry-On
When packing your carry-on, be sure to include frequently used medications and other necessities to ensure they aren’t lost in baggage claim. It’s also a good idea to make a list of all medications and their dosages and include them in the carry-on in the event of an emergency. Save your checked bag for clothing and other items that could be easily replaced.
Arriving Early
Most airlines recommend travelers arrive at least two hours before flight time. This gives you plenty of time to navigate the gates, get through security and check your bags. If you arrive too late, not only is there a chance you’ll miss your flight, but it can be much more stressful for both seniors and other travelers alike.
Watch What You Eat
Traveling long distances often can cause dehydration. This along can result in fatigue and interfere with blood sugar levels. Drink plenty of water and avoid caffeine, which can also cause the feet and hands to swell. Also, be sure to eat light to avoid any stomach upset.
