Baby Beaver Makes History
A baby beaver has been born in Enfield, London, for the first time since they were hunted to extinction in England around 400 years ago. Born in September, the kit and its parents are part of London's first beaver reintroduction programme that began in 2022.
Naturally re-engineering the local ecosystem
The birth is great news for the programme, which began with a young pair of beavers last year. Sadly, the male beaver died and the female was subsequently relocated, setting the project back a few months. However, a second pair from Scotland were introduced during the winter and have been busy transforming their six-hectare enclosure into a natural wetland ecosystem by building dams, stripping bark and even felling trees. There are discreet cameras in place to monitor the animals and the footage shows that both the parents and the kit are thriving.
The beaver reintroduction programme is about more than just bringing beavers back to London. They are a key part of a wider Natural Flood Management initiative. The beaver's transformation of the ground to a sustainable wetland will not only encourage local biodiversity but will also have flood defence properties. This will help to protect hundreds of homes downstream from flooding.
This project is an innovative approach to tackling climate change and improving local ecosystems. With the success continuing, Enfield Council are looking at more reintroduction programmes and natural rewilding techniques. Hopefully, the positive results will encourage other councils to follow suit.
