The Best Roof Shingles For Your Home

When considering the best roof shingles for a home, it is important to consider the right roofing materials for the job. During roof repairs, the existing roofing guides the decision as well.

METAL ROOFS

Metal roofs have many benefits as a roofing material. Perhaps the best benefit is its resistance to weather damage. It rarely needs repairs after hail, for example. If a knowledgeable roofing company installs it, metal roofs can withstand winds from storms that might strip shingles away. These days, there are additional options for metal roofs, such as thermal coating to reduce cooling bills in the summer.

COMPOSITE SHINGLES

Composite roofing shingles are the most commonly-used roofing material, for good reason. They are economical, very easy to repair, and just about any roofing company can competently install them. Shingles overlap and form a seal that prevents water leakage for a long time, but are susceptible to damage by storms and very high winds.

CORRUGATED ROOFING

Corrugated roofing has been around for a long time and has proven to be a durable solution. It comes in different materials as well – metal, plastic, and the light-weight fiberglass kind. Like metal roofing, corrugated roofing can be fire-resistant and will withstand most weather events. It is easy to install so most roofing companies will do a solid job on installation.

WOOD ROOFING SHAKES

Wood roofing shingles are time-honored, and while fiberglass shingles with the appearance of wood are gaining in popularity, few materials can beat the redwood shingle or cedar shingle for beauty and a "historical" feel. Modern wood shingles are cut thicker than in times past, and are more durable than they used to be. Many come in decorative patterns primed for painting, now, called fancy-cut shingles, to add a touch and enhance curb appeal. Wood shingles are more susceptible to fire than some other roofing materials but come treated for fire resistance. This may be a factor in roofing decisions.

SLATE SHINGLES

Slate is a very expensive roofing material, but it can also last a lifetime – or several lifetimes. It comes in a variety of colors and designs as well, so homeowners can partially customize the look of the roof. These tiles interlock, directing water away effectively, but are very heavy. They can be brittle when struck by heavy hail (or kid toys), particularly if they are not properly installed.

QUALITY ENHANCEMENTS

Some of the better roofing companies can do more than lay down shingles and sheets. They can enhance your roof with sealants and protective coatings that dramatically increase the life of your roof. Not every company offers high-quality sealants. Some still use water-based sealants, which can retain moisture and may have an inconsistent thickness when applied, leaving gaps in protection. A quality roofing company that keeps up with the latest technology will offer a water-free sealant that transfers less moisture, effectively cools the roof, and reduces maintenance.

When selecting the best roofing material for your house, consider appearance, cost, durability, and whether a qualified roofing company is available in a time frame that meets your needs.
