Few things warm up your room more effectively than an area rug. They help ground the space, tie in all of the colors, and just make a room look complete. However, there is a right and a wrong way to use an area rug. If you want to get the stunning finishing look that an area rug can provide, you need to follow these three tips:
Start with the Area Rug
When decorating a space, the first thing you will want to do is select the area rug. It is a lot easier to choose your furniture and wall décor by matching your rug than it is to try to find a rug that perfectly matches all of your existing pieces. With that in mind, look for a rug with several colors to pull from so you're not stuck to the same color scheme for the life of the rug. If you are trying to find a rug for an already decorated space, don't stress too much about finding the perfect color match. As long as it contains similar hues, it will look fantastic.
Choose the Right Size
When it comes to selecting an area rug, the number one mistake is choosing a rug that is too small. If it is too small, it will not serve its purpose of pulling everything together. A good rule of thumb to follow when selecting an area rug for a living room is to make it big enough that the front legs of the furniture can rest on it in the desired arrangement. For a dining room, the rug should be large enough that all of the chairs and the table can fit on the rug, with enough room for the chairs to be pulled out and sat on without going off the edge.
Keep Function in Mind
There are many different types of rug materials available, including everything from synthetics to wool to silk. The type you should choose has a lot to do with the function of the space. If it is a formal living room that won't see much foot traffic, a silk or wool area rug is a luxurious option and is sure to impress. However, if the area rug is being used in a high-traffic area with kids or pets around, a synthetic option might be better. It is much easier to clean up, and since it is less expensive, it's not that big of deal if it gets ruined.
