You know, for those of you that want to get started working, there are a few basic skills you may need. These are helpful whether it's your first time back to work after five years of being laid off, your first job, or you're changing industries. I hear all the time how women want to apply for a job, but they don't have experience. Even starting with a basic office or call center job is better than nothing, right? If you have no idea of where to begin, below is a few skills you may want to start and get under your belt. Typing Skills Just because you are on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram all day does not mean you are qualified for many jobs that exist. Most jobs these days, especially office positions, require you to use the computer – therefore, type. I mean, it's the 21st century, people! I'd say to get yourself typing at least 45 wpm (words per minute). A good way to get started is to try out a free online program such as Free Typing Game to test your speed. Then, just type whatever you may see at any time. If you don't have a computer at home, guess what…hit up the local library in your area. Now please, don't list your typing speed on your resume… it's expected you can type their minimum requirement. Experience with Basic Microsoft Office Program You don't have to be a certified Microsoft Office person. However, you should know some basic thing such as saving a document, doing basic formulas or at least how to navigate and find the formulas, and possibly create a graph or PowerPoint presentation. You should also know the basics of sending an email. Most organizations use Microsoft Outlook. It's just like sending a text – however, more professional. This is very useful in any secretarial position. Below I list a few places you can learn some of these skills for free. How to Write Unfortunately, many of us write how we talk. Our social environments are of course fine, but we can't bring that into the workforce. So brush up on your grammar skills. You'll need this in speaking to people, presenting, as well as writing emails or other reports. I suggest starting with my favorite site: Grammar Girl.
