This is a writing sample from Scripted writer Anthony Sillemon
The BMW 3-series nameplate still shines today, 47 years later. This car has evolved with iteration, making improvements based on customer feedback. This is what has kept the BMW 3 series alive for that long. Sporty, stylish, sophisticated, and delicate are the best description of this car.
Before buying your next BMW 3 series, you need to know that the 3 series are great small luxury cars that balance performance and economy. A plug-in hybrid is great for the economy, and a diesel variant is also very economical. The flip side is that these cars are delicate, and proper maintenance is not optional.
This article outlines 10 important things you need to know before you invest in your next BMW 3 series. Here, you will learn all about what makes the 3 series a great car and some of its weaknesses.
1. The Fully Hybrid Plug-In 330e Is a Worthy Gamble
Full hybrids are becoming increasingly common as the world goes green. You may want to consider the fully electric 330 e for your next 3 series purchase. This new generation of BMW plug-in hybrid cars is truly a game changer. It offers the best of both worlds: freedom of electric driving with extended range capabilities. It is awesome.
The 330 e delivers a 41-mile electric-only driving range. This range in itself will cover most of your daily commutes. If you are a town user, you can thus enjoy this car as a fully electric vehicle to and from work. If the throttle thrill turns you on, this car is for you. The electric motor capable of 111bhp and an instant 195 lb-ft of torque complements the 2.0 littler turbo gasoline engine for an amazing performance. The gasoline engine churns about 221 bhp and 221 lb-ft of torque.
You cannot just add these figures to get the total. Still, this setup comfortably delivers 249 bhp and a combined system torque of 310 lb-ft when needed. That right there is an adequate punch to satisfy your excitement. The model also comes with the Xtraboost function for better throttle response and overall performance. 0-62 mph takes 5.8 seconds and 5 seconds with Xtraboost. So many amazing features make this car a worthy consideration for your next BMW 3series.
2. Diesel BMW 3 Series Are Troublesome
Many will not tell you this, but you must tread the diesel BMW world carefully. Online reviews show that diesel engines used in the BMW 3 series are troublesome. I am talking about the BMW 320d here, and this is the only 3-series model you will find in diesel. The fuel economy for this engine used in the coupe, wagon, and sedan variants of the 320d offers excellent fuel economy, but the maintenance costs eat this up.
A look around most other reputable websites reveals serious reliability issues with this model. A failed timing chain is a major concern with the earlier N47 diesel engine post-2014 B47 engines. A tickling metallic sound in the engine pay will point to a faulty tensioner, the main culprit in most timing kit fails.
Other notable reliability concerns surrounding the 320 d include craft shaft sensor issues, stalling engines, EGR cooler failures, and oil leaks. However, these problems are not common in the modern 320d (G20) models manufactured in 2020, 2021, and 2022. I recommend steering clear of the 2010-2017 320d models and settling for this latest G20 (320d) model.
3. To M or Not to M
The BMW M3 is a darling to many due to its exemplary performance. It is not the most affordable option, but it is a performance car worth every penny. You may want to consider an older 4th (2007-2013) or 5th (2014-2019) generation M3s that are more affordable. Also, if this still does not fall within your budget, the earlier 3rd generation M3s (2000-2006) are worthy considerations.
I vouch for the M3 as opposed to the closest rival, the M5, due to its performance and affordability. While the M5 is more of an executive sedan, the M3 is an executive sedan sports car. The 3-liter six-cylinder twin-turbo engine that has been maintained across the next generation models is capable of 425 horsepower.
There’s nothing quite like the thrill of fast acceleration as you take one of these cars out for a spin. The powerful engine under the hood can move this car at a speed of 0-62mph in just 3.9 seconds! Available as a 6-speed manual or 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, you can count on having an amazing time behind the wheel with newly updated features. Your purchase also comes with 4 seats, perfect for comfortably bringing your family along wherever you go.
Newer models of the M3 bring numerous accompaniments such as digital screens, heater first-row seats, and height adjustment. To M or not to M is thus just a matter of choice.
4. Bigger Trunk in the Latest Models
Trunk space is a major consideration for car buyers. Most luxury sedan buyers want a trunk that comfortably fits several suitcases for that family trip. BMW 3 series has maintained remarkably spacious trunks across generations and models.
The 2022 BMW 3 sedan has a 17 cubic feet trunk, the plug-in hybrid has a 13.2 cubic feet trunk, and the M3 models have a 13 cubic feet trunk. These are excellent trunk sizes for the small luxury cars that the BMW 3 series.
These bigger trunk sizes are a major improvement from the 4th and 5th generation BMW 3 series, which had a 14 cubic feet trunk for the sedan. The BMW 3 series evolution has come with bigger trunks. It is also important to note that the door lids in these newer models are automated.
5. Loads of Interior Features in Newer Models
Another reason you should consider new models is that the 6th and 7th generation BMW 3 series is improved interior features. The latest G 20 7th generation (2019-2022) BMW 3 series models boast the iDrive user infotainment system with an incredible voice assistant, 10-speaker stereo, and satellite radio.
Ultra-comfortable seats, premium audio system and dual-zone climate controls come standard on every car, along with a moonroof, auto-dimming mirrors and remote entry. This better interior is another reason to consider a newer model of the BMW 3 series.
6. Comfortable Seating
Comfort in the BMW 3 series has evolved through the years. The seventh-generation BMW 3 Series makes for a polished and quintessential compact luxury car. The sedan seats five, while the plug-in hybrid version seats four. First-row support is excellent, and you’ll appreciate the ample outward visibility.
The back seats are also super comfy, with ample leg and headroom, even for taller people. The seats are synthetic leather and of good quality build. The front seats are ventilated, while the rear seats are heated. The model also comes with two sets of latches to support the installation of child safety seats.
7. Expect Some Cabin Noise
This seems to be a cross-generational issue with the BMW 3 series. Numerous complaints about road and wind noise while driving above 65mph have occurred, and the noise is worse in the diesel variant, the 320d. Unfortunately, the manufacturer has not managed to get around this issue even in the G20 7th generation 3 series.
Customers, however, single out the passenger side floor board does a poor insulation job, and tire roll and suspension noises escape to the cabin. Drivers of the 7th generation G20 talked of having to turn up their audio to drown out this noise.
8. Warranty
BMW offers various services to keep its 3 Series cars in peak condition. Services vary throughout the life of the vehicle. BMW is committed to ensuring that its customers remain happy with the car.
As you plan on acquiring the next 3 series, consider the Appearance Protection Package or an extended warranty for up to 7 years or 150,000 miles. These packages are better than the normal BMW three-year/50,000 miles unlimited mileage retailer warranty.
The extended warranty is an all-inclusive maintenance package that ensures your car receives genuine brake pads, oil, and discs from your retailer. The extended warranty also provides roadside user assistance in case of unforeseen events.
9. A Bit Pricey
The 6th and 7th generation 3 series cost a bit more than competitors from rival brands. The performance, comfort, and quality built come at a cost. However, every extra penny is worth it as the bimmer will outlive most of its competitors. Be prepared to pay more for this value for money. The G20 7th generation 3 series is particularly not cheap.
10. Timely Service Is Key
This applies to all BMWs. No bimmer will handle torture and tolerate negligence. Though the 3 series engines are stock engines, they are very sensitive. The diesel engines are even more delicate. Missing service by a few miles can prove fatal to the health of your engine. Also, be very keen on oils and genuine parts.
Conclusion
The BMW 3 series has a history spanning more than 47 years. The heritage of this small luxury car is rich, with impressive improvements with each iteration. The BMW 3 series sedan is the most practical and versatile car. You may also consider the sportier M3 or the electric plug-in hybrid. Newer models are better but timely service and maintenance are never optional.
