Improve Your Writing Skills on 5 Minutes a Day
Do you have a few minutes? Try one of these exercises to help improve your writing skills.
Anyone can improve their writing skills in just minutes a day with a few simple exercises. Good writing takes talent, but exceptional writing is a honed skill that takes practiced discipline.
1 Utilize Prompt Writing
Pick a topic, any topic, research it and start writing. Picking a different topic every day will not only help your writing, but also improve your research skills.
2. Choose Strong Words
Great writers choose strong (occasionally aggressive) words. The right adjective or verb will grab and drive the reader’s attention. Use a dictionary to choose words that denote strength. Each day, pick two words and write the words in a sentence to become acquainted with them.
3. Open the Thesaurus
Pick a word, look it up in a thesaurus, and write the variations in a work-in-progress to become familiar with the different words.
4. Read Often
Reading isn’t writing, but it’s just as important. Strong writers are usually avid readers. When reading, look over sentence structure, word choice and how the pieces flow to learn new styles that you can later emulate.
5. Highlight Favorites
Highlight favorite phrases or sections in books or magazines that capture your attention. Analyze whatever writing catches your eye closely to learn why it appeals to you and how you can make your writing reflect a similar style.
6. Write Small Pieces Every Day
Write every day, even if it’s just a nonsense limerick. Some days you will be on top of your game, but other days you might lack the creative drive needed to produce outstanding writing. Limericks help get creative juices flowing.
7. Create Captions
Caption images on a day-to-day basis, such as photographs or paintings you encounter. Captions are short and quick, and they help you expand on your creative or witty writing skills.
8. Record Dreams
Every morning, record your dreams in a logbook. It’s a great way to delve into your own psyche while improving your writing skills.
9. Free Write
Pick a topic and start writing. Don’t pay any attention to spelling or grammar while writing — just write for five minutes and then stop. Give your creative juices free rein to flow while free writing.
10. Rewrite Favorite Lyrics
Music is said to soothe the savage beast, but it also gets people in an inventive mood. Pick a favorite ditty every day and rewrite it.
Many people refer to writing as an art form, but it’s also a learned skill that can be improved with daily practice. It only takes minutes to do each of these exercises, and in time, they can tighten your writing skills.
