St Jerome's Laneway Festival This Weekend

This is a writing sample from Scripted writer Sarah Alexander

From humble beginnings in Caledonian Lane back in 2004, St Jerome's Laneway Festival has spread to seven cities across Australia and New Zealand and for the first time this year, Singapore. Dedicated to finding some of the most currently sought-after music from all over the world, the Laneway Festival began with Jerome Borazio and Danny Rogers' (both of 1000 Pound Bend, Sister Bella, Ponyfish Island) Summer Series. These were Sunday afternoon sessions featuring the then emerging Australian bands The Presets and Architecture in Helsinki. These sessions progressed to include Brains on a Saturday night, a residency for acclaimed DJ crew The Avalanches. Not long after, the laneway was closed off and those iconic bins removed to make way for the first St Jerome's Laneway party of 1400 people. Moving forward, they've relocated to Footscray, after serious problems of overcrowding at the 2009 festival. 2011 marks the festival's second year at the riverside location, a spacious venue that can also accommodate the Laneway Markets: designer clothing and food stalls from emerging creatives selling everything from socks and frocks to sweet baked treats. But, still keeping true to the original ethos of bringing fresh local and international music to the masses, this year brings another coveted line-up to the stages, including Deerhunter, Ariel Pink, Chk Chk Chk, Beach House, Blonde Readhead, Cloud Control, Foals, Holy F@#K, PVT and Yeasayer. lanewayfestival.com.au
