Hashima Island, Japan

Once one of the most densely populated areas in Japan, Hashima Island, or The Ghost Island as it is also known, lays deserted. If you have ever wondered what the world would look like if mankind was to suddenly vanish, this abandoned and deathly silent island provides the answer. Will you be brave enough to walk the Stairway to Hell, or descend into the Coal Mine? Arranged tours leave daily from the port of Nagasaki, so if you are looking to add a little eeriness to your Japanese holiday, Hashima Island is well worth a visit.

Island Of The Dolls, Mexico

Just a short drive south of Mexico City, you'll find a small island with a sad, but intriguing history. Isla de las Muñecas, or Island of the Dolls as it translates into English, was never supposed to become a tourist destination. Legend has it that a little girl was found drowned in the waters surrounding the island, and that her doll was found nearby. From that day forward, as a mark of remembrance and respect, dolls and doll parts were hung from trees in the spot where she was supposedly found. It is said that people have seen the dolls open their eyes and move their arms and legs. It is also said that the dolls whisper to each other.

Banff Springs Hotel, Canada

The Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel is well known for its luxurious interior and great service. In contrast, it's also known for many mysterious goings on over the years. Queen Elizabeth II and Marilyn Monroe have both stayed here, but unlike them, and if legend is to be believed, not all guests have been lucky enough to check out. Regular sightings of a bellboy carrying luggage have been reported, and you may also catch sight of the ghosts of a family supposedly murdered in room 873. The room was sealed off a long time ago. Do you dare stay on the same floor?

Château de Brissac, France

For scares a little closer to home, the 11th century Château de Brissac in Maine-et-Loire has its fair share. For it is here that a gruesome double murder took place during the 15th century. Ever since, according to regular reports, the rooms and corridors of the castle have been paced by the Lady in Green, or la Dame Verte as she is locally known. Dressed from head to toe in dark green, she wanders around the castle moaning and revealing her disfigured face to terrified guests.

Mary King's Close, Scotland

If you ever find yourself in Edinburgh at night, and at a loose end, head to Mary King's Close. This collection of tunnels and underground streets was constructed during the 16th century, and was abandoned during the grip of the plague. If you hear footsteps here, it will just be the many spirits of victims who succumbed to the plague, and the disembodied voice you hear will just be the spirit of a little girl named Annie calling forlornly for her parents. Nothing scary at all!
