Spotlight on music classics: Sh-Boom
This is a writing sample from Scripted writer Tabitha Richert
Some songs can be easily categorized as "Oldies," "Jazz," or another genre or era, but others don't fit as well into our preconceived mental timeline. These music classics, like fashion classics, come back into style over and over again. Are they immortal, or are they zombies that don't know when to call it quits?
One of the most persistent classic songs is titled "Sh-Boom." This song (which you may know by its alias "Life Could Be a Dream") first hit the charts in 1954. The doo-wop song immediately crossed category lines by scoring in the top ten in not only the R&B record charts, but also the pop charts. Later in the year, it rose to #1 in the Cash Box magazine charts.
The song dropped out of the public eye for years but experienced a brief revival in the 1970s-80s. Soon after, it began to appear in movies. It was first used in Clue (1985, but set in 1954) and subsequently in twelve other movies and mini-series, including the 2006 Pixar film Cars. Its most recent appearance in a movie was in 2011 (Dolphin Tale), so it's still going strong. Still not sure if you've heard the song? Take the time to listen, and it may sound familiar. . .
